Industry report on Korean Cinema (April 2015)

We present the fourth industry report on the South Korean Cinema.

Overview

During April more than 12 million people attended the South Korean cinemas, resulting in sales over $95 million dollars. Korean Films manage to attract almost 4 million spectators while most of the admissions went to Foreign Films, which gathered more than 9 million views. Korean Film got more than $23 million dollars on sales and Foreign Films gather more than $72 million dollars on ticket sales.

Taking into account the numbers obtain this month with the ones from 2014 we can see that there is a small increase of the industry. April is known to be the month with the less activity especially for local films because most of international productions are release this month. Despite this the numbers show something interesting. The Total Admissions grew 23.03% compared to last year. The Korean Film admissions grew 93.19%, reaching almost 4 million viewers. As for the Foreign Films it shown a slightly increase of 3.26% despite the premiere of films like “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Fast & Furious 7”. The total gross of the month has an increment of almost $29 million dollars.

Movie Release

This month the most watched Korean Films were: “Salut d´ Amour” (Contents Panda) by Kang Je-Gyu with 1.048.054 admissions, “Coin Locker Girl” (CJ) by Han Jun-Hee with 185.547 admissions, and “Revivre” (FINECUT) by Im Kwon-Taek with 137.747 admissions. As for the Foreign Films they were; “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (US) by Joss Whedon with 4.664.186 admissions; “Fast & Furious 7” (US) by James Wan with 3.179.586 admissions; and “The Gunman” (Spain, France, UK) by Pierre Morel with 107.265 admissions.

Most Watched Films

This month the most watched film were; “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (US) by Joss Whedon with more than 4.5 million views. In second place was for another foreign film, “Fast & Furious 7” by James Wan with more than 3 million admissions. “Twenty” by Lee Byeong-Hun got the third place with 1.687.603 admissions. In fourth place “Salut d´Amour” by Kang JeGyu with 1.048.054 admissions. On fifth place we got “Kingsman: The Secret Service” by Matthew Vaughn with 372.125 admissions.
